Geography fast facts (uniqueness)
  • The solid-green color flag was used by Libya from 1969 till the time Gaddafi was overthrown in 2011. It was the only national flag in the world which had one single color.
  • Libya had only one King in its entire history. Idris was king of the country from 1951- 1969 as well as the head of the Senussi Muslim order. In 1969, his regime was defeated by Gaddafi.
  • Women in the country have absolutely no rights. Their only roles is to clean, cook and give birth to children.
  • Libya provides all its citizens with free education.
  • Alcohol consumption is prohibited by law in Libya.
  • Libyan citizens are given loans at a zero percent interest rate.
  • There are no beggars on Libyan streets and until recent bombings, there were no homeless either.
  • The government provides free houses or apartments to all newly-married couples.
  • The government controls all courts in the country and there is no concept of a free public trial here.
  • Almost one third of the Libyan population does not have access to any safe drinking water.
Capital City: Tripoli is the capital city and the largest city of Libya. Tripoli, with its metropolitan area, has a population of about 1.1 million people.
Religion: Sunni Islam of Maliki school of jurisprudence is the dominant religion in Libya. Other than the overwhelming majority of Sunni Muslims, there are also small Christian communities, composed exclusively of foreigners.
